Coal Mill CO Analyser

Coal Mill CO Analyser

The early detection of coal fires in coal handling systems on coal fired power stations is essential to prevent catastrophic damage to expensive plant and serious injury to personnel. The most reliable and accurate method of detecting coal fires or smouldering is to monitor the carbon monoxide levels within the coal handling plant areas such as silos and mills and to detect rapid increases in concentration.

Specific and harsh environment as well as high concentration of dust in gas-dust mixture, are the main reasons why traditional extractive systems are not suitable for gas sampling and its “preparation”. The Codel System samples the gas (from a mill outlet) through a steel sintered filter mounted in the wall of the chamber. This solution prevents erosion of the filter as well as collecting of dust on its surface.

The sampled gas requires no further pre-conditioning and is carried via a sample line and air pump to the measurement chamber which is equipped with a compact infrared gas analyzer. The measurement chamber is trace-headed to avoid a build-up corrosive condensation. The measuring instruments can be mounted on individual mills or they can be combined in a functional groups “covering” all mills working at the same boiler.

In 2010 the Continuous Mill Fire Detection System has been tested in one of big Polish power plant co-firing coal with biomass fuel.
